RITA MCKENZIE, CO-ORGANIZER

Rita

I have been a member and assistant coach with Houston Fit for many years and in 2015 I became co-organizer of the Winter program.  I have completed three full marathons (Chevron Houston twice and Marine Corps) and over 50 half marathons.

The slogan for Houston Fit is “Run a Marathon, Change Your Life” and it certainly has changed mine.  If you have ever been to watch a marathon, you will see all shapes, sizes and ages.  It is truly inspiring and I honestly feel that anyone can accomplish this goal with dedication and proper training, which why I enjoy being involved with Houston Fit.

In addition to being a member of Houston Fit, I also run for the Texas BEEF Team.   The Texas BEEF Team is a community of runners, triathletes and cyclists who recognize the nutritional benefits of lean beef and the vital role high-quality protein plays in our training.

I am not a fast runner.  I will never win any races, so running to me is about having fun, staying active and accomplishing goals. I look forward to training with you and helping you achieve your goals!

“I grew up in Westbury in southwest Houston. I currently live and work as a Realtor in the near northwest/610 Loop area.  1998 was my first year with Houston Fit and my life has not been the same since.  Since joining Houston Fit, I have run twenty-seven marathons.  Fourteen of them have been the Houston Marathon.  I was an assistant coach with the Yellow Group most of the years that I have been with Houston Fit.  This will be my sixth year to co-head coach the Yellow Group.  It is the friends, the marathons, the road trips, and the state of mind that marathon running has given me that are nothing short of amazing.  I have been married for twenty-nine years to Connie and have two great kids; one in college and one out of college. “

I have been running with HoustonFit since 2009. I trained to complete my first marathon with the Yellow group and have been stuck to them ever since. I become a coach in the winter season of 2010.  I have completed 8 marathons, qualified 4 times to run the Boston Marathon, but have only ran it once. April 2017 will be my second time. I have ran the Marine Corps Marathon, Chicago Marathon, and 5 Houston Marathons.  I will be running my first New York City Marathon on November 2016. All the women in my family are HoustonFit members including my 68 year old mother, 40 year old sister, and 13 year old niece. I am honored to have been invited to be a Head Coach for the Yellow group this season. Good luck to you all this season and God bless!

FRED SCOTT, CO-HEAD COACH

My name is Fred Scott. I am the Red Group Head Coach. I joined Houston Fit in 1998-99.  I am a UH grad, married, and am employed by ExxonMobil.  I always wanted to run a marathon. A major life event( the death of my Father) spurred me to start that year.   Running has introduced me to a whole running family and some dear friends.  I have run a lot of races in seventeen years including New York, Chicago, Big Sur(CA.), and of course Houston(and 13 Half Marathons in 2013).  The motto is real for me-Houston Fit has changed my life. I want to pass along what I have learned to help you reach your goal.

BEVERLY SCOTT, CO-HEAD COACH

Tajas TriHello, my name is Beverly Scott. I’ve been a runner since the early 1990s and joined H-Fit in 1997 to train for my first marathon, left for a few years and came back in 2006.  I’ve been coaching with H-Fit for several years.  I’ve done many full & half marathons (both road & trail), numerous sprint Triathlons, 1 MS 150 and more 5K & 10K races than I can count.  I work at Schlumberger since 1988 & AEMS part-time since 2000 as an EMT-I.  I love all things outdoors.  Nothing gives me greater pleasure than to see new runners progress and achieve their running goals.  I believe that whatever effort you put into something will be the results you’ll receive.  USA Fit’s program works!  See you at the starting line in January!!

Edward Campos

I have been with Houston Fit for 8 years. I started with the Purple group. My first marathon was the Houston Chevron Marathon. My wife inspired me to join Houston Fit. Since then I have finished 22 Full Marathons and 10 Half Marathons. I also finished a 10 ½ mile trail run in Auburn, California.

The reason I like to do marathons is because each one presents a unique challenge.  Unique, because you never know what kind of weather you are going experience.

My goal is to stay active and continue my passion for doing marathons!

I have been with Houston Fit since 2006. My first full marathon was the Houston Chevron Marathon in January 2007. I believe I could not have done it without training with Houston Fit. I run/walk with the Purple group and have made great friends. I enjoy walking every Saturday with this group. Training with Houston Fit has been a great part of my life. Since joining Houston Fit, I have completed 22 full marathons (including the Seabrook Lucky Trails Marathon Trail Challenge ), 11 half marathons and a trail run in Auburn, California. In 2012, I became an assistant coach for the Purple group and I love it! My goal is to keep going, and going, and going!!!

I have been employed by Cy-Fair ISD for eighteen years. I have three children and one grandson.

HALF MARATHON – REGULAR

Head Coach - BUBBA THAMES

Bubba Thames

Thames PortraitBecause I was training by myself, it took me 3 years to train for my first marathon 22 years ago.  Fortunately, I found Houstonfit and I discovered that running with a group of positive, friendly, supportive people made training much easier and a lot more fun.  In 1995, I started with Houstonfit as a member of the Full Marathon Yellow group and became an asst. coach in 1998.  In 2008, I switched to the Half Marathon group as an assistant coach.  I then became the Half Marathon group’s head coach a couple of years later.  I’ve done 12 full marathons and a bunch of half marathons.

Sara – HEAD COACH

SARA JACOBSON

I have always been a sports competitor (even if I was just competing with myself).  I did not know I could compete in walking and slow running until I found the Purple pace group with Houston Fit in 2005.   Since joining the group, I have completed 14 half marathons and one full marathon.

I have been a participant, assistant coach and now the head coach of the Purple Half Marathon training group.  Along the way, I have seen many people complete their goal of finishing a long distance race and made many good friends in the process.  I welcome all who want to excel and compete, whatever their pace.  I and a great team of assistant coaches want to make sure that everyone stays safe and healthy, has fun and finishes strong.

Please join us – Purples Rock!
